The Origins of RoHS
The Directive was created by the EU, and adopted in 2003. By mid 2006 the directive had taken effect throughout the EU, and became enforced by law. To become compliant with the law manufacturers were restricted in the types of materials that they would be able to include in their products. The law was meant to coincide with recycling laws put in place to help reduce hazardous waste created by consumer electrical goods that were being thrown away. Electronic devices are often created with many toxic materials, and it is the goal of the RoHS to limit the use of these toxic materials so that disposal is safer, and waste has less effect on public health.
What it Means For Products
Meeting ROHS compliance means that restrictions are placed on the use of six dangerous substances.
- Lead
- Mercury
- Cadmium
- Hexavalent chromium
- Polybrominated biphenyls
- Polybrominated diphenyl ether
The limit placed on these substances is .1% concentration; except for cadmium, which has a limit of .01%. The important thing to note is that these limits are not placed on an entire product, but on each separate substance that makes up the product (essentially anything that can be removed mechanically from the product). This means that a final product and its components are allowed to exceed these limits, and still remain in compliance, as long as no single part from the product contains substances over these limits.
