Most switching transformers can be gate drive transformers…. the name comes from the action of the transformer….
Current that flows through a MOSFET does so between the FET’s DRAIN and SOURCE…..how much current that flows is a function of the applied voltage at the GATE of the MOSFET….
A switching transformer, often used within a power supply, controls the current flow as ON and OFF by delivering the voltage needed at the GATE to SHORT and OPEN the FET….
The transformer also provides electrical isolation between the drive circuit in front of the transformer and the FET(s) that the transformer drives…..
So the name, “Gate Drive Transformer” literally comes from the action of the transformer….as it applies pulsed voltage to the GATE of a FET it controls the flow of current through that FET from DRAIN to SOURCE….
There is nothing all that special about the transformer itself….it can be a flyback, a PUSH-PULL or even an LLC transformer – again it is the action that gives this transformer its name….
See below the schematic for this type of transformer in a circuit….
